Who are the San Antonio Prime Timers?

Imagine establishing a foundation of over 200 friends from varying economic, racial, and age composition in one quick action.  Joining San Antonio Prime Timers (SAPT) offers a wide variety of social options ranging from fishing to ballet, flea markets to classical concerts and community service to long-term relationships.  From 38 interest categories, the Prime Timers develop social activities for senior bi-sexual or gay men to participate with others in our community.

Founded in 1992, San Antonio is in 2017 celebrating its 25th anniversary of membership in the society of Prime Timers Worldwide that began with a simple social gathering in Boston in 1987.  The worldwide society has grown to more than 75 chapters throughout the United States, Canada, Australia and Israel with close to 15,000 members.  The local chapter is comprised of 200+ men ranging in age from 39 to 94 years with a near-equal mix of married or partnered men and single members.

As with the society as a whole, San Antonio focuses its membership on older gentlemen who are not in the mainstream of gay activities and those men who enjoy the company of older men. Our organization is very stable with couples ranging in time together from 1 year to 49 years with the average being 20 years.  91% of SAPT members renew their membership each year. With all this variety of men in our organization, you are sure to find friends with similar backgrounds or likes and activities to match your budget and interests.

Of particular importance to our chapter are the community service activities in support of several charitable causes.  Educational presentations at our meetings include health and other topics.  We stay in touch with a local newsletter and calendar.  Annual dues are surprisingly low and affordable to all.  Whether you are a newly arrived resident to San Antonio or one who has lived here for a long time, San Antonio Prime Timers offer a wealth of activities and potential friends to get you out of the house and active in the community. Check out our upcoming and annual events and activities in the other sections of this website, and contact us soon to become a member of our dynamic organization.

Who are Prime Timers?

primetimers-ww-logoPrime Timers was founded in 1987 by a retired professor, Woody Baldwin (for more information about Woody, please visit his website here). He felt a wide gap existed in today's society, which caters almost exclusively to youth. This worship of eternal youth is never more flagrant than in the gay culture. Woody began the Boston Chapter by placing ads in local newspapers and soliciting his many friends. He expected only a small handful of men to attend the first meeting and was surprised when over 40 showed up. This indicated to Woody a need for social and cultural organizations to aid and support the aging gay and bisexual man. Now this organization has grown to over forty chapters worldwide, located throughout North America, Europe and Australia.

Travel opportunities for members are vast. Individual chapters welcome the chance to meet visitors from other chapters. Letters asking for local information and recommendations will be well received and promptly answered. Chapters enjoy showing off their communities and having visitors come away with a feeling of kinship and brotherhood with their newfound friends. The Prime Timers Worldwide Convention is held to discuss business and attend workshops geared toward Prime Timers. Our Conventions have been in Vancouver BC, Dallas TX, and Washington D.C., and more. And each year during Mardi Gras in New Orleans hundreds of Prime Timers gather to celebrate life, freedom and each other. We now reserve an entire hotel just for Prime Timers. Keep an eye on our on-line PTWW Events page, since much more is being planned for our worldwide members, chapters, and affiliates.

Our organization is emerging as a leading force in the gay and bisexual communities, and while we are not a political organization, we are concerned with society as it effects the aging gay and bisexual population. As our organization grows, we will be leading the pack in seeking answers to the needs and problems of maturing gay and bisexual men. It is hoped that soon a Prime Timers Chapter will be in every major metropolitan area in the world.
